2007 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Comfortable compact priced to sell. introductionthe ford focus is inexpensive, stylish, practical and fun. We found it more comfortable than some of the other compact cars, with roomy, cushy seats and a nice balance between a soft, smooth ride and responsive handling. It feels more european than japanese or american in demeanor and refined for the class. focus comes in three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback, sedan, and wagon body styles. That makes it appeal to different types of people and meet their individual needs. the sedans are comfortable and move people efficiently. The three-door hatchback is economical and practical, yet sporty and fun at the same time. The five-door hatchback makes it easier for rear-seat passengers to join in the merriment. The wagons can carry a ton of cargo and are good for dogs. for 2007, the focus enjoys optional new leather-trimmed sport seats, two new exterior colors and upgrades to the sound systems. The focus is expected to get styling revisions and other upgrades for 2008, so expect deals on the 2007 models. the zx4 st is particularly sporting with strong acceleration from its 151-hp engine and sharp handling and precise steering from its sports suspension. The s trim level comes with manual driver's seat-height adjustment, split-folding rear seat, am/fm/cd/mp3, and 15-inch wheels. Side-impact airbags 350) are available for all models, and we strongly recommend getting them. Anti-lock brakes 400) and traction control 115) are available for most models. Its styling at the time was fresh and innovative. Styling revisions for 2005 gave it a more refined, more grownup appearance, but it continues with same general theme of sweeping arcs and crisp creases that we've grown accustomed to. interiorthe interior features a traditional, clean and stylish look. The instrument panel is symmetrical with the driver and passenger areas divided by two rectangular climate control registers, the hazard switch and a shallow center stack for the audio and climate controls. for 2007, new sport seats with leather seating surfaces and contrasting leather inserts are available on the st sedan as well as the se and ses models (except wagon). This seat treatment is part of the new interior upgrade package 495), which also includes two-tone, leather-wrapped steering wheel with charcoal upper and flint lower to match the seating surfaces; a satin finish on the center stack surround and instrument-panel cluster gauge surround; and black sill plates with exposed focus in body color. street appearance packages are offered for the st sedan and the zx3, zx4 and zx5 se and ses models to give the focus a more sporty, tuner look. The sport appearance packages feature spoilers as the focal point, along with unique front fascia and rear bumper treatments and bright exhaust tips. on two-tone models, the lower portions of the instrument panel and door trim panels are finished in a lighter shade for a more open feeling. Cloth and leather upholstery are offered. The zx4 st has unique woven fabrics or suede seating surfaces surrounded with leather trim. a standard floor console houses the shifter, two cupholders, the parking brake, and controls for options such as traction control. An overhead console includes a sunglasses holder and a space for a garage door opener. Storage is also provided in the front doors, which feature molded-in bottle holders. a cd player with mp3 capability is standard on all models. It puts out much lower emissions so it meets california's pzev (partial zero emissions vehicle) standards. the focus zx4 st is fun to drive. Ford borrowed suspension pieces from the european-market focus and the 2004 focus svt to give the zx4 st sharper handling. The zx4 st comes with unique 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels and pirelli all-season radials. The package provides sharp handling response, precise steering and generally an enjoyable connection with the road. we found the higher horsepower engine in the focus zx4 st delivered strong acceleration performance and cruised easily on the highway. The only complaint with the engine was noise. Despite efforts by ford engineers to quiet the cabin, the zx4 st was noisy even when cruising at highway speeds. 2006 hyundai tucson review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. And for the even more common suv duties of urban commuting and suburban child-rearing, something small, affordable, and easy on gas is more sensible than a behemoth. the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v pioneered the compact suv market, which ford soon came to dominate with its escape. Hyundai staked a claim in this territory a few years ago with the slightly larger santa fe; then added the tucson for 2005 to take on the rav4 and cr-v more directly. the 2006 hyundai tucson features some minor appearance revisions and a new flagship limited model. the tucson is a good choice among compact suvs. It's not the best of them, but it's comparable to the other vehicles in this class, including those from the big brand names. Power and associates, which surveys owners on product quality, rated tucson as the highest-quality all-new model for 2005. That's impressive list of active safety features. Add to that six airbags, including side-impact airbags for torso protection and side curtain airbags designed to provide head protection for passengers in both rows. Tucson has earned a five-star safety rating from the u. Government in front and side impacts. Basic gl and mid-range gls continue as before, while last year's lx model has been replaced by a more luxurious limited model. Gl comes standard with front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission. Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control, am/fm/cd audio, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, heated power mirrors, roof-rack side rails, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Enhancements include upgraded cloth trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, a more powerful audio system with cassette and mp3, a trip computer, front wiper de-icer, illuminated vanity mirrors, gray lower body cladding, a tire pressure monitor, fog lights, and wider tires. Mirrors and door handles are body color instead of black. Lower bodyside cladding is body color rather than gray. The only options available for gl are mud flaps 75) and roof-rack cross rails 205). walkaroundhyundai's larger suv, the santa fe, has always drawn mixed reviews for its styling; some like its unusual curvy lines while others think it's goofy-looking. Although the hyundai tucson is built on the same platform as santa fe, it is a fraction of an inch longer in wheelbase and seven inches shorter overall, creating very different proportions and a totally different look. Where santa fe is elongated, tucson is stubby and cute, not dissimilar from the honda cr-v. the tucson has clean lines with a relatively big grille up front and headlamps that blend in well with the hood line and edges of the fenders. The front bumper is a large one-piece molding that begins just below the grille, houses three large air openings and two fog lights (on models that have them) and then forms a spoiler at the bottom. Yet in profile this impressive piece of plastic barely protrudes in front of the grille opening. At the back, the outer edges of the rear bumper reaches up to the tail lights; this bumper sticks out a few inches, adding protection. tucson's rear tailgate slopes forward, avoiding the van-like vertical look of many other small suvs. The rear window can be opened separately from the main tailgate although it is not very big, making it ineffective for loading much more than small light stuff. gls comes with lower body cladding that runs from the front bumper, around the fenders and along the lower edges of the doors, to the rear bumper. Finished in matte black, the cladding is not too obtrusive. Limited features a monochromatic look, with body-color cladding as well as the same body-color mirrors and door handles as the gls. all models come with 16-inch alloy wheels; although the wheels on gls and limited are more intricately styled. A roof rack and tinted windows are also standard on all models. even though tucson is not intended for serious off-road driving, it does have relatively short front and rear overhangs for improved clearance. This is largely thanks to the tucson's long wheelbase, fractionally longer than that of the honda cr-v or ford escape, even though both of those vehicles are several inches longer overall. Tucson's longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs is a sign of superior design. The tucson also has a relatively wide track, which helps improve its stability. interiorthere's nothing cheap or spartan about the interior of the hyundai tucson, although it won't be mistaken for a luxury vehicle. Trim accents are matte black in the gl, bright metallic in gls and limited. The gls comes with brightly colored cloth seats that some people find too gaudy, while others like the pattern as it brightens up the interior. big radio and climate controls are mounted reasonably high for easy reach, as is the shift lever. In addition there are a couple of cupholders in the center console. It's also nice to see a proper parking brake lever in the center instead of a pedal-operated parking brake. There are no fewer than three 12-volt power outlets; apart from the usual one at the front there is one in the rear cargo area and one at the back of the center console for use by the rear seat passengers. thanks again to tucson's long wheelbase, ingress to and egress from the rear seats is good. Once inside, rear-seat passengers will find adequate head and leg room for all but the tallest people. The front passenger seat folds flat also, providing room for long objects or a convenient desk for a lone driver. a reasonable amount of rear luggage space can be hidden by a solid rear cargo cover/parcel shelf. A large washable rubber mat covers a hidden under-floor storage area. The mat also helps protect the flooring, as well as providing a non-slip surface. There are six tie-downs at the side for securing cargo in addition to three grocery bag hooks. driving impressionwe had the opportunity to drive a few different tucson variants, all powered by the v6 engine. Around town and out on open highways the 173-horsepower v6 delivers adequate power for what is a relatively heavy vehicle for its size. Those who want to be more in command can push the shift lever over to the shiftronic semi-manual mode. Just a few years ago such an option was only offered on high-end sports cars. the steering felt connected, although a tad light in feel. the brakes were smooth and stopped the vehicle efficiently. Abs keeps the wheels from locking up and sliding on slippery or uneven surfaces, so the driver maintains steering control even in a panic stop. Ebd adjusts the front-to-rear proportioning of braking force according to the load on the wheels and continuously adjusts as the weight shifts forward during a stop. Again, this kind of sophisticated active safety equipment was the exclusive province of expensive cars just a few years ago. a brief drive along a rocky dirt track showed that the tucson can manage some light off-highway duty. Without low gearing and aggressive off-road tires it was not able to climb a really steep slippery slope. But judging from the old skid marks we found, it didn't look as though many other vehicles had managed to get up that particular slope, either. a downhill stretch of smooth, slippery, muddy gravel road nearly afforded an opportunity to test the electronic stability control system. But then we eyed the high crown in the middle of the road, and the deep ditches on either side, and decided that this was not the place to try to induce a slide.

New midsize sedan is smooth, comfortable, roomy. introductionthe 2005 buick lacrosse replaces both the regal and the century as buick's midsize sedan, representing 50 percent of buick's annual car sales. Buick says it has the competition, specifically the ford five hundred, dodge intrepid, honda accord, and toyota camry, beat on a number of fronts, including quietness and overall refinement. This is a car that was well on its way to completion when gm vice-chairman and product guru bob lutz joined the company, and charged the buick team to delay the program one year, get the car right, and then introduce it. It's pretty clear that the wait, and the extra effort and money invested into the program, were worth it. lacrosse is not an all-new car by any means. It's built in canada on gm's w-car intermediate platform, one of the oldest in the gm chassis inventory. But about 80 percent of the parts and systems underneath are new, along with new interior and exterior designs. the lacrosse has a rich, high-quality looking interior with attractive woodgrain trim, nicely presented instruments and controls and available leather seats with nice-looking gathered stitching. Buick's quiet tuning has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in among the entire class. the lacrosse rides smoothly and quietly, but its steering is much more precise than previous models and it turns into corners crisply with little body lean. The v6 engines offer good power, growling under acceleration, but smooth and quiet when motoring along, and the transmissions work flawlessly. new features make a well-equipped lacrosse a safe, all-weather family car with nice conveniences. The cx 22,835) is the base model and it comes with cloth upholstery and manually operated air conditioning. The lacrosse cx is powered by a cast-iron 3. 8-liter overhead-valve v6 engine that was first introduced in buicks back in 1979, the continuously improved and now rated at a modest 200 horsepower. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are optional. the middle model, the cxl 25,335), comes with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, abs, and quite a list of additional standard equipment. The cxl also uses the 3. 8-liter engine. the cxs 28,335) is the performance car of the family, with gm's new high-feature 3. 6-liter v6 with modern double overhead cams and variable valve timing develops about 240 horsepower. The cxs gets its own suspension and steering system, 17-inch tires and wheels, and a raft of additional touches like driving lights under the front bumper. the lacrosse is available with five- or six-passenger seating: either bucket seats with a center console and shifter or a 40/20/40 bench seat with the shifter on the steering column. Standard features include tilt wheel, remote keyless entry, power driver's seat, programmable power locks, power windows, and a six-speaker am/fm/cd system. All models come standard with onstar including a one-year subscription. options include side curtain air bags 395), stabilitrak chassis control on the cxs model only 495), xm satellite radio 325 with one-year free subscription), power sunroof 900), remote starting 150), heated front seats 295), 17-inch chrome wheels 695), and a chrome package 295). A gold convenience option package 1,150) is offered with a leather steering wheel with redundant climate and audio controls, a universal transmitter, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outside mirrors, six-way power passenger seat, rear park assist, and rear reading lamps. Two cast aluminum wheels are available, one 16-inch and one 17-inch. walkaroundlacrosse is unmistakably a buick sedan, with its trademark vertical bar waterfall grille, long nose, long slopes and simple body curvatures. They've added a tiny third side window behind the c-pillar to add some visual interest. About the only new design theme is at the rear, where there is a discernible dent in the decklid that ties the taillamps together. There is a single, slender chrome side spear on the doors and body in lieu of anything sportier. the base lacrosse cx comes with 16-inch wheels and bolt-on faux alloy wheel-covers and has almost no decoration at all. Body, door, and fender gaps are noticeably smaller than on the regal and century, and the new aero headlamps are said to be 35-percent brighter. Cx models can be identified by a grained graphite-color finish on the rocker panels underneath the doors, while other models have these panels in body color. gm's aging w-car architecture has been torn apart and put back together to improve the lacrosse's ride and handling by several orders of magnitude. The old steel front cradle has been replaced by a lighter, stronger, stiffer extruded aluminum one that holds the engine, transaxle, steering and suspension tighter, controls powertrain rocking, and weighs 20 pounds less. buick says the new car is designed with more high-strength steel content than regal and century, a magnesium cross-car beam behind the instrument panel, another cross-car beam behind the rear seats, steel reinforcements in the rocker panels, interlocking door latch system, high-strength steel door beams, and a double-thick quiet steel floor pan and firewalls, all added in the name of crash safety and quietness. Altogether, buick says, about 40 additional pounds of sound deadeners have been added to the car, including structural foam in the front fenders. interiorthe buick designers were given a much longer wheelbase, two inches longer than the old century and regal. And all of it was dedicated to back seat legroom. My 6-foot, 4-inch frame can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room to spare now. the lacrosse interior is altogether new and different from the cheapie regal and century rent-a-car interiors. There are fewer but larger individual pieces, built to closer tolerances, for a richer, higher quality look inside. The instruments and controls are presented in white on black, and each of the three round dials in the deeply tunneled instrument panel has a chrome ring around it. Very nicely presented, sportier-looking than previous instruments, with small-diameter chrome-ringed knobs arrayed around the dashboard. the center stack is done in a mica-flecked flat black, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy to put through its menu, though the information panel is so glossy that it's hard to read in the morning or afternoon light. The entire dashboard is decorated with a very good imitation woodgrain material. Taken together, the system has made the new lacrosse one of the quietest, most pleasant cars to ride and drive in in the entire class. new optional features available on the lacrosse that were never available on the century or regal include a remote starting system that will work from up to 500 feet away, onstar, xm satellite radio, and stabilitrak, and if we were ordering a lacrosse, we would add all of these excellent systems to make a truly complete, safe and all-weather family car. driving impressionwe drove all of the lacrosse models at the car's introduction in northern michigan. Both of the available v6 engines have been tuned to give a nice, healthy growl on full throttle, but disappear into the background in high-gear cruising. the standard 3. 8-liter engine is rated at 200 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque, a cast-iron v6 that's been fitted with electronic throttle control (etc), a stiffer crankshaft, an underhood silencer, new pulleys, new power steering, and a structural oil pan all in the name of less mechanical noise. With all of its new parts, the 3. 8 is the same gutsy v-6 it's always been, with good torque on demand, smooth, quiet operation, and 29 miles per gallon on the highway in the new car. the new 3. 6-liter, the so-called high-feature v6, with double overhead cams and electronic throttle control has quite a bit more horsepower and torque, revs more freely, but comes only in the cxs (at a $3,000 price penalty). The final numbers are expected to be 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 230 foot-pounds of torque at 3200 rpm, and 28 mpg. the transmissions in all three versions worked flawlessly. The optional stabilitrak suspension package comes with magnasteer ii power steering. we found the csx more sporty to drive through the trees on an autumn day in northern michigan.
